Los Gatos, California is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 59,151 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in San Francisco and the largest city in Silicon Valley. Los Gatos traces its history back to 1847 when it was granted land by General Mariano Vallejo for his Rancho Santa Clara de Atascadero. The name "Gatos" means "wolves" in Spanish and this name stuck because so many of the early settlers were Mexican wolves that had been brought over as slaves. The first permanent settler was José Antonio Burlaco who built a cabin on what is now Government Street in 1849. In 1870, George Hearn founded the town of Hearst City and named it after himself. He also donated land to Los Gatos for development which would become one of Silicon Valley's most important nodes of commerce and industry during its early years. In 1876, Jens Jensen started an ice cream parlor called Jensen's Dairy on Market Street which became one of Northern California's most famous businesses until it went bankrupt in 1957. After years of struggle against competition from other cities within Silicon Valley such as Palo Alto and Menlo Park, Jensen sold his business to two brothers - Gordon Cooper (founder thereof) and Ronald Perelman - for $2 million in 1969. They renamed it Intel Corporation with their initials inside a red triangle across the door symbolizing innovation and progressivism under one roof like no other company before or since. During World War II, Los Gatos became one of America’s leading industrial zones with heavy production of munitions such as aircraft engines, tanks and warships; however high levels of radiation exposure led to numerous epidemics among workers including cancer rates that reached epidemic proportions by 1950 attributed to Japanese bombing raids during the war which destroyed entire neighborhoods near Intel sites across San Mateo County including Los Gatos itself; however due to public health concerns over breast cancer rates among female soldiers during peacetime especially those stationed at nuclear plants nearbyIntel withdrew all operations from their local towns/cities but kept materials stockpiled therefor decontamination purposes; however by 1962 these sites were once again operational electric utilities began repairs/maintenance on older reactors throughout Silicon Valley recommencing production at several sites beginning Dec 1974 atomic testing activities closed Stanford University campus making new home for thousands displaced persons from Hiroshima includedamong them 6 pregnant women & their children born addicted to plutonium dust inhalation- caused birth defects neurological impairments life expectancy shortened significantly
