Los Banos is a small city in Central California, about an hour and a half from the Bay Area. With a population of just over 10,000 people, it's the town most directly surrounding San Francisco. The city has been around for more than 100 years, and its early history can be found in the area now known as Banos. Banos was founded by Mexicans in 1849 as part of an effort to find new land to settle after Mexican independence was declared. After a few years, many of these settlers also decided to settle in what is now Los Banos. The first permanent settler were two brothers named José and Miguel Hidalgo. They founded the town on November 15th of that year and opened up their land to farming. At first, they only grew corn and beans; later they began growing grapes and other fruits and vegetables. In 1862, FernandoMaría de Asís y Peralta purchased some of the property that currently makes up Los Banos from José Hidalgo for $1 per acre. This purchase allowed Asís y Peralta to build his large rancho (house) on what is now Main Street. He soon became one of the largest landowners in town with his holdings totaling over 220 acres (100 hectares). Over time, he added more properties to his holdings which totaled over 1,000 acres (500 km2). By 1897, he had developed Los Banos into one of the largest ranches in California with assets worth $10 million dollars ($250 million today). At its peak during World War II, Los Banos had a population of 20,000 people living primarily within its own boundaries while also serving as a small stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad between San Francisco and Sacramento. However following 1945 when war production Ended in California there slowly started to decline until at its low point by 1970 when it had less than 5200 residents remaining making it an agricultural community once again typical for Central Valley life-style where families farms 3-5 acres yielding about 1400 bushels/acre or 2 tons/ha yield giving them full use of sun,. rain or snow during summer months good soil conditions are needed for crops

Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is located on the bank of the Kern River. Los Banos has been called "the most beautiful small town in America" and "the perfect place to raise children." The name means "little banal stream". The first people to live in Los Banos were the Hualapai and Paiute Indians. They built their Chancel House in 1838. The town was founded by Don Miguel de la Cueva y Peralta, a Mexican landowner, in 1846 as a stopping place for wagon trains coming from Nevada and Southern California. The post office was established at Los Banos on July 12, 1851, by Hiram Swayne Barnes. At that time it was the only post office in Kern County. The first known person to be buried here is George Cushing who died on October 20th of that year at the age of 78 years 10 months while working as teamster for Wells Fargo & Co.. A large part of present day Los Banos developed around Sears Roebuck & Co.'s grocery store which opened its doors in 1902. Other early industry leaders included the American Crystal Glass Company (founded 1912), First National Bank (1914), Dodge Truck Corporation (1927) and Pacific Electric Railway (1945). In 1951 Bob Hope entertained troops during World War II at what is now Memorial Stadium before moving on to Hollywood Bowl two days later with his bandstand show from then until his death less than two years later thereon on December 15th 1945 aged 80 years old after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer five months earlier In 1957 an air force base named Peterson Field came online just north of town limits after WW2 when LAAF Technical School moved from Edwards AFB near Redlands due to lack of space Northward however it closed soon afterwards due to budget cuts or lack thereof according to one source also another source says this may have been due because USAF leadership felt that LAAF presence would help keep local farmers afloat during times of drought while also providing needed military support during WWII not too far away such as bomber operations over Japan
Los Banos began as a small, agricultural community in the late 1800s. It quickly became an important commercial center for San Luis Obispo County and its surrounding areas. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1847, and grew rapidly during the early years of California's incorporation into the United States. In 1851, Los Banos became the county seat of San Luis Obispo County; it remained that way until 1925. During the early 20th century, Los Banos experienced significant industrial growth and development; its industries included papermaking, food processing, printing press production, and shipbuilding. However, during the 1930s and 1940s, industry declined as a result of the Great Depression. By 1974, however, Los Banos had regained some of its former prominence as a cultural and commercial center. Today, it is one of southern California's most vibrant communities with a strong local economy.
