One reason for this Growth was the booming manufacture of optical instrumentsation such as lenses and mirrors in Japan during World War II which caused a sharp decrease in demand for American-made telescopes domestically. However, growth resumed following the war when new technologies like digital imaging created a renewed interest in astronomy. Today Los Banos remains one of America's leading astronomical production centers with over 100 companies engaged in telescope manufacturing including major brands like Celestron and Nikon among others

The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Los Banos were Missionaries Pedro Fonseca and José de Santiago who arrived on July 24, 1797. They named their small settlement "San Bernardino" after Mount san Bernardino which they had seen from their ship anchored off shore while mapping Route 1 across Sonoma Valley. Fonseca and Santiago founded a mission that served both local natives as well as foreigners: The Nuestra Señora de la Purísima ConcepciónMission (now known as La Purísima Concepción Parish). In 1824 Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena purchased Rancho El Cajon from Antonio Maria del Valle for $6,000 from Nicholas Applegate who had sold it to Fernando Wood in 1821 for $2,500 plus interest; it covered . From here he started building up what would becomeSolano City with over 27 adobe buildings before finally naming it after himself – "Banos" – on December 4th of that year amid much celebration by all who attended his inauguration into office. At this point only about ten families lived there including many converts to Christianity brought over by Fonseca and Santiago along with a few Native Californians such as Gabriel García Márquez and Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University. With some help from American military officers stationed at Fort Point in Sausalito they soon began expanding agriculture and cattle herding operations which continued until 1872 when General Mariano Castro took control of Mexico during America's war with Mexico known then as the Mexican–American War; business activities ceased because transportation was difficult to come by without going through Baja California Peninsula where much smuggling occurred involving Americans looking for smuggler jobs on Mexican boats onto U.S.-owned vessels passing through Baja California en route to Californias ports of entry Open container or drunk driving laws were established especially around this time so people could be punished more effectively rather than leaving town completely unsupervised thereby promoting lawlessness within an increasingly unsafe area full of bandits amd smugglers
