In 1911, LOS BANOS AVE., now part of HWY 101, was named after General John J. Pershing's military unit which operated out of this area during World War I. There have been many changes to the community since it first started to thrive as a fruit grower and wine producer: In 1907, Los Banos became home to the world's first commercial grape growing operation when Winton Brothers opened their vineyard on what is now State Street. That same year also saw the opening of the "Bananes" store on US 99A near today's Walmart property; one of only two grocery stores open within walking distance of downtown Los Banos at that time In 1915, bananas were added tothe local food supply ordinance which made them available for purchase from any business owner anywherewithin 1000 feet of his or her premises without paying a fee From 1951-1974, all produce imported into Kern County came through Los Banos; resultingin an annual increase in production from 12 million pounds to more than 50 million pounds over that period! Today, nearly all produce grown here comes from outside sources including China and India (with some locally produced items). In 1982-1983 (during wildcat strike), several thousand employees working at various businesses along Main Street went on strike demanding better pay and benefits; eventually securing improvements such as 401k plans and vacation time with company matching funds . In 1990-1991 (after passage of Proposition 187), then City Manager Don Chapman implemented ethnic quotas limiting Hispanic representation on city council; creating tension between local residents and newcomers who felt they had lost something due to these restrictions . After years of negotiations led by Mayor Tom Batesman culminating with implementation of an affirmative action program (#1 Chicano/Latino high school graduate Andres Ramos served as our Community Development Director) ,the old discriminatory quota system was repealed effective July 1st 1999 making LosBanios one percent Latino/Hispanic overall... ever since!
