Los Banos, California (formerly Banos, CA) is a city located in Ventura County, California. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is seat of Ventura County and the most populous city in the county. The area now known as Los Banos was first inhabited by the Tongva people who called it Yuma. In 1847, General Mariano Castro decided to build a military post here after defeating Mexico in what is now known as the Mexican-American War. In 1849, Los Angeles County was created from parts of San Bernardino and Orange counties and Los Banos became part of that new county. After becoming an incorporated town on February 14, 1912 (!), it became one of the largest cities in Southern California by population growth during World War I before losing its status when other large cities such as Pasadena and Long Beach gained cityhoods. Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, north of Bakersfield. The population was 3,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kern City–San Joaquin Valley Regional District. The first people to live in Los Banos were the Tongva people who called it "Banan hori" meaning "place where cotton grows". The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "a place for bending rice plants." In 1846, Wm. H. Park Sr., a fur trader and member of the Board of Regents for University of California (UC), located his holdings in what is now las Vegas on Rancho San Ramon and named them Los Banos after Bananas Lakes near his home at Cloverdale in Marin County. Park also gave rise to nearby Bakersfield's first business park - Parkland Farms - which opened in 1873 along with sections of present-day downtown Las Vegas and much of east Las Vegas. In 1865, Chinese immigrants founded an agricultural village known as Yuhua on Sutter's Ranch south of los banos. Over time, this community became known as Nanking or New Nanjing due to its similarity to modern-day Nanking, China. A new store was built each year until 1888 when one store replaced all three previous stores together forming what is now Pioneer Road between Main Street and Sutter's Lane east of los banos centerline).
