In 1892,Los Banos became an incorporated city. At that time, it had just over 1,000 residents. By 1910, the population had jumped to over 10,000 and by 1920 it had reached 20,000. In 1924, Los Banos passed its first ordinance regulating handguns and firearms. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and is part of the Bakersfield–Madera Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Los Banos comes from "Lobos" or "wolves" and "Banos" or "banks". Spanish traders first discovered oil in this area in 1859. They named their discovery "Los Banos", after the river's banks where they found some small salt flats. In 1864, an American company, Eastern California Oil Company (ECO), drilled a well near present-day Los Banos and began producing oil from that well in 1865. Because of its strategic location for access to oil resources throughout Kern County and southernrisks posed by Mexico's chihuahuanas, Europe also became interested in Los Banos during this time period;EGT sold shares to Dutch interests here in 1870-71. The original townsite was established about three miles north ofpresent-day Los Banos on what is now State Route 47A. The first post office opened there on October 15, 1912; it closed on March 14, 1975 due to federal funding cuts A new post office called Conejo had been established just east of present-day LOS BANOS when ECO shut down operations there on July 3rd 1976 One early rancher who farmed here was John Sutter who moved his herd from Redding CA to this area around 1895 during one of many dramatic changes taking place west of Interstate 5 ranching here boomed as more people came into the area looking for supplies during World War I and II
