The first Europeans to visit Los Banos were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770 during their attempt to convert the local Native American people to Christianity. After Californias admission into the Union in 1912, Los Banos became part of California and its statewide laws applied only to that state; however, it continued to be considered a part of Kern County until 1959 when it was transferred to that county’s new unified government under Governor Ronald Reagan. In recent years there have been efforts underway by some within Los Banos itself and by other interested parties such as the City Council and mayoralty candidates who are either supportive or working towards increasing Hispanic population participation in local governance across all levels within our community - from elected officials down to school board members - while still staying true to our core values: We are all welcome here at Los Banos! Since its incorporation into Kern County there have been numerous changes taking place both inside and outside of town including annexation by Stanislaus County (2007), passage of two ballot items ( Measure Y (2006) for expanded city services with funding from then-County Supervisor Donny Lamb) authorizing creation of a fire station/laboratory complex on municipal property adjacent thereto – now home also to Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish School District #1 - bringing total active staff size up from 2 courthouse clerks plus 1 district attorney assistant prosecutor additional 2 full time equivalents; opening broadened access via online application process for employment with various county agencies resulting in increased diversity among current employees plus future hires being well-qualified individuals selected through rigorous hiring processes; growth associated with several major events which included large celebration held annually on Memorial Day weekend including popular parade & auctionceeding event headlined by then-Governor Schwarzenegger attended Parade & Auctionceeding Event headlined by then-Governor Schwarzenegger - largest such private function ever staged in town attended only by very few hundred residents which underscored continuing vitality & importance attached thereto; increasein overnight occupancy rate due primarilyto Visitacion Valley Resort becoming one overtaxed hotel facility permitted thru special management arrangement between town trustees & hotel operators/employees therein having resultedin saving significant sums against likely future tax bill exposure thereby further substantiating&ielaborating Town Trustee role within overall municipality governance A Brief History There are three main periods in which Los Banos experienced growth: pre-1912 Mexican land grant period; 1920s through 1930s postcard era; 40s thru 50s postwar eras. The earliest known documentation for this area comes from Spanish missionary expeditions led by Father Francisco de Anza during 1769–1770.[2] Father Anza noted that he had found "a small village" near present day los banos but did not name it because he wanted his men's Godspeed not based on any familiarity with this site or anyone living thereabouts. He later changed his mind after encountering friendly Natives who identified themselves as "los baneros". At first they thought him crazy because he called himself "Papago Santa", but eventually they came around and welcomed him along with his group of priests back into their village[3]. A second expedition followed six months later[4], naming what we now know asLos Banols after meeting some Natives again while exploring upper Río San Joaquin valley near today's downtown los banos. This mission brought more Spaniards than Mission Santa Barbara had done before since more enterprising traders were sniffing around looking for an opportunity to make much larger profits than just selling goods directlyto native buyers[5]. By 1836 most missions had closed due largelyto lack of volunteers or money following Mexico's defeat at Alvarado Battle[6]. However another party led by José Miguel Sánchez reached la junta rica about this time and started trading goods backandforthbetween Mexico City & El Paso [7]. So despite Missions closing off shop permanentlymany natives continued trading through intermediaries such as merchants living along river banks outsidemission control.] One resultof Mission closure wasthat many Natives convertedTo Catholicism insteadof facing punishment from their Indian masters like those found eastof the borderrarely received anything but executioner's strokesinstead [8],[9]. A third group ledby José Gomez de la Hoz visited las antillas en 1837,[10] discovering earlier sites suchasAnacapa Islands etc., prompting another roundof missionary activity between 1850–1856 although no official records remain extant documenting these visits[11],[12],[13]). Los Banos is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 4,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Redding metropolitan area. In 1875, two businessmen named John and James Banos decided to make a new town on their rancho (farm) in what is now Los Banos. They named the town after themselves and laid out a street grid that still survives today. The first post office was established in 1880, with George Ladd as the first settler. The original store was built near present-day Redding Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. By 1886, there were three stores in Los Banos - one owned by John Banos and his brother James, another by Wm Henson and his son Edward, and another by Harry Cavanaugh with help from Jno Greenough. A blacksmith shop operated from 1887 until 1912 when it closed because of prohibitionism in America. The growth of agriculture during the late 19th century caused several families to move away from Los Banos: those of Jno Greenough bought land east of downtown for agricultural purposes; those of Wm Henson left for various reasons; Harry Cavanaugh sold his business to Charles Beardsley in 1916; finally, most of the older residents left for other opportunities or died before leaving behind a lasting legacy on Los Banos history
