Gun targets have been a part of the history of Los Banos since the early 1800s. The first target was erected in 1827. The earliest type of target used in this area were cast iron cannons, which were fired from long distances. These targets were usually placed on hills or other points out of reach for enemy troops, and often caused great damage to them. In 1876, a man by the name of George Wickersham erected a small plastic cannon known as the “Wickersham Rifle” in honor of his late father-in-law. This target became an important part of local gunnery tradition and has been used ever since to commemorate these events. In 1905, Alvarado Manufacturing Company erected a large metal target known as the “Alvarado Rifle” at its factory location in Los Banos. This target is still being hit today by shooters from all over the area! It is one of the most popular targets around here, and has become an icon for locality shooters alike. In 1951, a new type of target called “Targets with Ejector Pouches” was designed and designed by Harry Kesselman at Alvarado Manufacturing Company. These targets are really unique because they are capable of exploding when hit! They quickly became very popular among locals and visitors alike, and continue to be enjoyed by all who take advantage of their availability today.

The first gun target in Los Banos was the White Sands Rifle and Pistol Range, opened in 1912. The range closed in 1926. In 1933, the old steel plant on Geyer Street was destroyed by a fire. This led to the opening of the First National Shooting Gallery by Jack LaRue located on Bascom Avenue east of downtown Los Banos. The gallery operated from 1934-1941; it moved to its current location at 2125 S. Bascom Ave., across from Sears, Roebuck & Co., in 1941. In 1949, LAZCO Corporation acquired the adjacent lot for use as their corporate shooting range; this property remains active today as LAZCO Corporate Shooting Range - Los Banos (LBSR). In 1962, LBSR became part of the newly created City of Los Banos Recreation and Parks Department when it merged with former city recreation director Harry Finch’s office vacated by Mayor Alfonso Gomez Jr.. In 1984, LBSR was renamed to "City Hall Park" after then-Mayor Tom Bradley's request for a more public-friendly name following his victory over incumbent Don Williamson in an election campaign that year. In 1995, City Hall Park was purchased by privately owned Citizens Firearms Club (CFC), which operates it as their private shooting range today under the name "Liberty Arms". On July 1st 2006 CFC announced they were closing their business due to financial difficulties andooterwoode@aol dot com subsequently took over management of City Hall Park until new management can be hired effective October 1st 2006
Los Banos is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Los Banos" means "the banks". The community was founded in 1872 by brothers Hiram and George Waddell from Ontario, Canada. They came to America to prospect for gold near the Kern River Valley. In 1902, Los Banos became a dependency of the new U.S. government following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1912 it became its own incorporated city with a population of 1,500 people; however it reverted to its original name in 1916 when the City of Fresno combined with nearby Orchard Park to form what is now known as Fresno County.[1] In 1924, Los Banos annexed parts of neighboring Orchard Park and formed what is now known as El Centro; this annexation led to another change in name on November 15, 1928 when San Bernardino County merged into Fresno County and changed its official name from San Bernardino Animation Company Rancho de los Angeles du Parral To Los Banos Municipality Addition No 4 CA).[2] On July 12, 1934,[3] Los Banos annexe el Centro which led to yet another change on October 10th that same year when El Centro's incorporation into Los Banos Municipal Corporation
