The first Europeans to visit Los Banos were Spanish traders who landed there on September 10, 1769A.D. They named the place "Banus" after the mission of San Bernardino de las Banas (founded in 1769). The Mission of San Bernardino de la Encarnación (1784) was located nearby at what is now known as Rancho San Antonio de los Banos. A few years later, on July 20, 1819A.D., El Cajon Mexican land grant was made to José Joaquin Murillo and Manuel Nieto by Governor Alvarado for an area that included present-day Los Banos and parts of Bakersfield and Stockton Counties. During the Mexican–American War (1846-48), Battle of Los Banos took place on October 6th when American Infantry Regimentnumbered 25 companies fought against Mexican cavalry under General José Martin Cuellar north ofLOS BAJOS grazing their horses near today's Offutt Road intersection south from downtown LAHOMA RANCHES CANYON National Monument boundary line between USGS quadrangle #43741439N/123627264W (-118° 59' 44", +121° 07' 54") about 5 miles east southeast from present site of LOS BAJOS off OFUTT ROAD according to current topographic map which includes street boundaries developed since 1910 while original surveyor's notes remaining unrecorded; therefore approximate location may be some 20 miles NE or SE from centerline shown on map - this event occurred prior to township being organized as Kern County
Los Banos was founded in 1879 by José Antonio García and his brothers. The original name of the town was "Banío". In 1907, the town changed its name to "Los Banos" after José Antonio García's death.
