The first permanent settlement in Los Banos was made by prospectors on September 16, 1847 when they traveled from Fillmore to Toole in Search of Gold. They were met by José María Bartolomé who had been living at Fillmore and claimed that he could show them where gold could be found. The party traveled up the Sacramento River to Mono Lake where they camped for two weeks in order to find water supplies and possible routes back home. Back at their campsite on Mono Lake, José María Bartolomé discovered a beautiful stream named after him - Los Banos Creek - which conveyed water from Mono Lake directly into his rancho (land grant) for 700 pesos per acre Justice de la Cueva y Ulloa purchased from Juan Bautista Merino about 1800AD. This purchase placed Los Banos within what is now Kern County; it functioned as an eastern gateway between Fresno and Stockton counties during this time period. 1st Storey: 1848-1851 2nd Storey: 1852-1854 3rd storey: 1855-1857 4th storey: 1861-1863 The post office was established at Los Banos on December 15th, 1861 under the name of Sutter's Fort (now Sutter's Mill). On July 8th 1870 Mexican forces invaded United States territory adjacent to modern day Kern County including present day Los Angeles and sacked & burned our old mission church located at what is now downtown LOS BANOS . A large fire began burning near today's intersection of Main Street & Gentry Avenue and quickly spread across acres until it consumed most of buildings within minutes leaving only standing trees around theMission property which still stands today next door to LOS ANGELES State Historic Park
