Los Banos is a city in Orange County, California, located on the eastern coast of the United States. The population was 20,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Irvine–Santa Ana–Thousand Oaks–Burbank Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim Combined Statistical Area. In 1849, Governor Manuel Antonio Rivera y Vargas ordered Captain John C. Frémont to explore what lay beyond saline Lake Mono and report back to him as soon as possible. Frémont's party reached Los Banos on December 8, 1849 and named it for Don José de los Banos y la Garza who had helped them find Mono in 1847. The town grew rapidly during the Gold Rush era due to its location at an important crossing of two mountain ranges and its access to navigable rivers. The first post office was established in Los Banos on November 15, 1850 by James Waring with a name that has yet to be found: "N/A". In 1860, J[ohn] A[nton] H[empley] organized a local mercantile community which became known as "Banobon" because most of its goods were shipped from Santa Ana up the San Gabriel River via boat or horseback ride over difficult trails through rugged mountains into present day Los Angeles County. In 1870s one ofbanobos leading citizens was Captains Fanny Kemble Bacon (1836-1922)and Augustus Ewing Bacon (1862-1902). Other notable early residents include Mrs.[Anna?] Pomeroy (1844-) who raised chickens for export; Dr.[Francis] Biddle (1846-) who founded Frontier Medical Center; Judge Edward Everett Howard (1860-[?] – 1933), later Collector of Customs for Orange County; Mr.[John S.] Gunnarson (baptized 1854)[?], founder member and first president of Orange Coast College; Mrs.[Lydia Clark Ransom?] (1858-[?]) who befriended Anna Pomeroy after her husband died; Mactan [Moses?] Mountain Men’s Club organizer Doña Anastasia Calavera Yarnall];[Josephine Donaldson][wife of Rear Admiral John Landon Donaldson][née Jane Addams],[daughterof Charles DeForest Trump]. Downtown business leaders during this time included Waring & Sons merchants Frederick Waring,[Fritzie Bobecker], Jaspar Wiegand,[Juanita Woolridge], Julius Weiser,[Maria Antonia Giraudoux]; J[ohn] A[nton] H[empley]'s brother-in-law George Washington Hemphill and his son John A[nton Hemphill]. One particularly successful store patron during this period was General merchandise wholesaler Geo Smith whose store occupied corner First Street and Main Avenue from 1865 until 1923 when he sold it to Anheuser Busch Brewery . By 1880 Banobon had a library which served as both schoolhouse for children headed eastward by their parents working in nearby Anaheim under contract with Mission Trails School District #4 and also housed an annual summer fair where items such as cattle or pigs could be purchased cheap enough so that small farmers could afford to sell them far away from markets in California City or Red Bluff

Los Banos, California (formerly the town of Banning) is a city in Southeastern California, United States. It is the county seat of Kern County and lies on the San Joaquin Riverbank east of Bakersfield. The population was 381,339 as of the 2010 census. The name "Banning" originated from Spanish settlers who named it after their Rancho del Paso de las Palmas near present-day Banning, CA. The first settlement in what is now Los Banos date back to 1827 when John Chiles founded a small rancho on land that he had acquired from José Meléndez de Acosta. In 1838, Don Carlos Mariscal organized a band of Mexican soldiers and civilians called "Los Angeles Battalion", which served as the nucleus for what would become Kern County. By 1850, over sixty miles (97 km) of wagon trails led northward from Bakersfield through present day Kern County and into this sparsely populated area where today's city sits were being traveled by travelers looking for new markets for their goods and cattle. The first post office was established at Rancho Viejo in 1849. By 1860, there were only six residents living in Los Banos; four men and two women who farmed cotton and prospered because no railroads connected them to other parts of California until after 1880. In 1863, when Confederate General John Custer attacked Fort Tejon during his attempt to cross the Isthmus of Juan Fernández with his army reinforcements en route to reinforce General Ulysses S Grant at Mexico City, Los Banos played an important role in resisting Confederate forces until they were driven out by Union troops under George Armstrong Custer on July 12th 1863. A plaque located at historical marker N4 2S6 shows how some citizens helped blockade Confederate units along Interstate 5 while others gathered materials needed for constructing an improvised fortification made out of logs and pallets surrounding a barrel filled with earth which served as theirown private cannons or muskets against possible Indian attack should such an event occur; also note that one man found five hundred nails hidden among straw bales so that he could build himself a shelter around 1800 hrs during wartime like many frontier farmers did In 1870s bananas became very popular due to their sweet flavor but due to pests they had to be removed before harvest time then stored away prior to eating
