The California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) was founded in 1903. The organization is dedicated to the promotion of gun rights and education about firearms, including those used for hunting and target shooting. In Los Banos, CA, the CRPA has been working to keep guns available to law-abiding citizens since 1907. Gun barrels have a long and complicated history in Los Banos. At one time, cannons were fired from barrels that grew as large as 30 feet in diameter! Today’s shotguns use smaller barrels that are only 18 inches in length. Gun Barrel History in Los Banos In 1907, the CRPA began work on a project to keepguns available to law-abiding citizens in Los Banos. Their goal was to create an educational facility that would introduce people to the importance of firearms and teach them how to safely store and use them. The first building they built was called the “Gunsights Club” because it served as a training ground for new members of the CRPA community. After years of hard work, they eventually created what is now known as the “Los Banos Gun Museum” which contains more than 40 firearms from different periods of firearm history.

The first guns in Los Banos were barrels of musketry that were used to shoot targets. The first gunsmith in town was named John Brougham and he made handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols. In 1849 the town got its own post office and John Brougham's firearms business moved out of town. In 1851 a man by the name of George Atherton built a mill in town and started to produce flour, wheat and other goods. He also bought land around the mill and started to build houses. By 1864 there were over 100 people living in Los Banos with businesses, schools, churches and mills.
