Los Banos is a small town in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Los Banos" means "the banqueting place." The first permanent settler in Los Banos was J.H. Holmes in 1887. He homesteaded on the east side of what is now Main Street and built a log cabin which he named Hotel Isabella. In 1912, Avedis Sarkissian established a grocery store and post office in what is now the old high school building on Main Street which called itself La Posada de los Banos (The Ranch House of Los Banos). In 1913, Hilda May Day founded an orphanage known as Nuns' Home for Wayfarers (now Holy Name School). She raised money to build the first conventual church west of San Bernardino at the intersection of Main and Elm Streets - it became known as Our Lady's Monastery (later Benedictine) in 1926. In 1946, downtown Los Angeles was destroyed by fire that burned for days; Los Banos residents were able to help out by setting up shop at their civic center until it could be rebuilt (). In 1957, Interstate 15 crossed over from Riverside into Imperial County and US 101 bypassed downtown Los Angeles so that people living near US 101 could get to work without going through LAX or Downtown LA; this changed everything because shopping centers like Macy's and Sears went public just north of I-15 instead of downtown LA where they had been before! In 1969, when I-15 was widened to four lanes with no off-ramps between its two ends – making it one big freeway – everything south of I-15 got hit especially hard as most businesses moved inland because there wasn't anything around here to replace them except retirement communities! In recent years Los Banos has experienced a slow but steady decline which has resulted in its population falling to around 12,000 today.
