Today much of Los Banos' economy depends on agriculture: There are over 60% of all households that rely on some form of agricultural production for their income. In addition to being one of Kern County's major breadbaskets (the most productive agricultural areas account for more than 60% of all economic output), agriculture also provides support services such as health care and education; these services have helped contribute to growth within Los Banos since its incorporation into Kern County in 1932.

In recent years there have been increasing calls for greater development of Los Banos' status quo; however, despite some opposition from residents who feel that their community is being left behind by more transient populations nearby such as Anaheim or Garden Grove – both much larger communities with more vibrant economies – overall they remain largely supportive of their smaller neighbour.
