In 1914, the Los Banos Arsenal was founded and began producing high-capacity rounds for World War I. The arsenal produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition for use in that war. After World War I, ammo production stopped due to economic factors. However, it resumed after the advent of Prohibition in 1920. It would continue operating until 1993 when it ceased operations due to a change in regulations from state to federal government.
Los Banos is located in Kern County, California. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The town began as an agricultural community and today it has a diversified economy with a focus on industry, agriculture, and tourism. The name Los Banos comes from Spanish meaning "the apples" or "the fruit trees." The first Europeans to visit Los Banos were Franciscan missionaries in 1821 who named the settlement San Gabriel after their next-door neighbor, Santa Barbara. In 1847, José Gomez built a adobe mission here called El Cajon de las Palmas (El Cajon of Palm Trees). In 1863, Anglo Americans came to Los Banos and founded the Angeles National Forest here. A post office was opened in 1865 and became known as Bananos Station. In 1881, James Waddell platted what is now downtown Los Banos and established a flour millrace that provided water for his millinery business. By 1907 he had become one of Kern County's leading farmers with over 100 acres (40 hectares) of landholdings including four large apple orchards on which he manufactured apples for local markets. Waddell also donated land to the city of Bakersfield for park purposes; during World War II he furnished food storage warehouses for military personnel stationed in Bakersfield Airport while construction was being done on nearby Beale Air Force Base. His wife Alice Parks Waddell endowed the chairlift ride at Yosemite National Park which operates daily from Yosemite Village between Mariposa Grove and Half Dome Lodge; it is based on her husband's gift to $10 million through hisAlice Eileen Parks Foundation Trust in 1976.) In 1924 Voters passed an ordinance establishing two fire districts: District 2 covering eastern Kern County and District 3 comprising parts of western Kern County east of Interstate 5 including present-day LosBanos Municipality; both districts were abolished by state government in 1933 when all firefighting activities were transferred to single district headquarters under then Governor Hiram Johnson.. In 1912, Los Banos became an incorporated city under the name of banosidee City Hall moved from downtown to its present location on Main Street in 1911. Los Banos experienced significant growth during World War II as it became one of the largest military installations in southern California. The epicenter of this growth was what is now known as "Bananas Row," which was home to many military housing projects and command headquarters for U.S forces fighting in both world wars. After the war ended, Los Banos struggled economically until accelerating suburbanization began to take hold in the late 1960s and early 1970s; however, recent economic development has led to renewed interest in downtown Los Banos and its rich history. Today, Los Banos is a thriving community with two main streets - Main Street and Broadway - that are flanked by busy commercial districts filled with restaurants, retailers, and office buildings dating back to 1915 when Bananas Row was first built. Although much has changed since then – including waves of new population influxes due to annexations along Interstate 5 – there is still much that makes this historic city special: its longstanding support for local government; vibrant cultural scene; ample outdoor spaces; colorful festivals each year; diverse architecture including Victorian-era homes andCraftsman bungalows.;and centuries-old landmark churches such as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish church located near downtown."
