In 1957, Los Banos became one of only two Californian towns ever certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as meeting all requirements for high-quality computing technology including support for basic scientific data analysis and storage under environmental conditions conducive to life (i.e., dryness). In 1977, NIST designated Los Banos as "Site A" on their High Performance Computing Facilities Network which included some 20 research institutions from around North America dedicated to developing world-class technical solutions through collaborative efforts with global partners like IBM Research Marquette Labs in Milwaukee; NEC Corporation's Japanese Laboratory II Tokyo; University Microelectronics Laboratory - Australia; International Data Systems Laboratories Incorporated - Canada; NASA Ames Research Center - USA; Korea Electronics Industries Corp.'s Gyeonggi Province Headquarters - South Korea ; Fujitsu Siemens Electric Power Co., Ltd.'s Kobe Branch Office - Japan ; National Taiwan Normal University's Taipei Branch Office - Taiwan Los Banos also has several major companies headquartered there including: Kaiser Permanente Medical Services (founded 1935), Scripps Networks Interactive (founded 1997), Ford Motor Company (1946), Monsanto Seeds & Plants Company (1890), SRI International Information Solutions Limited(1997), Western Digital Corporation(2001).

Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern end of the Kern River Valley and east of Bakersfield. The name "Los Banos" means "The Town on the Banks." The first people to live in Los Banos were traders and travelers who came to explore and trade with Mission San Francisco de Asis (founded 1769) on the lower Kern River. They built Fort Tejon from 1827-1828 as part of their efforts to protect themselves from Comanche raiders passing through their territory. By 1854, most of what is now Los Banos had been developed as an agricultural community by ranching operations run by Anglo-Americans. Sheepraising became one of the primary industries in early Los Banos, but it declined following World War II when other forms of agriculture took over. In 1951, a group of local ranchers formed the Los Angeles Tract Company to develop land east of Bakersfield that they would own and manage for development purposes. This led to rapid growth in industry around Los Banos during the 1950s and 1960s; saw mills build up around town such as Saginaw & Western Mill (now owned by Chevron), Ralston Purina Producers Processors plant (now owned by Monsanto), Kiewit Corporation's Papermaking Factory No. 1 (now acquired by Dow Chemical Company), Southern Pacific Railroad tracks running through town, and numerous housing developments such as Cummings Homes & Gardens/Civic Center Plaza/Homespun Row/Hiroyuki Homes (later purchased by Lennar Homes). During this time period also began extensive renovation or replacement of many older buildings in downtown Los Banos; many are still standing today including Bank Building (/Old Post Office building), Masonic Temple (/Old Lodge House), Presbyterian Church (/Church Number One], Union Carbide Co./Bathroom /Laundry Room / Storefront - now used as a parking lot for businesses adjacent to it (/Bank Annexe Drive)), First Baptist Church (/First Methodist Episcopal Church - later replaced with newer structure), High School Annexe Drive (/High School - later replaced with new structure) and more than twenty individual homes throughouttown which were added during this phase including: Cummings Home & Gardens/Civic Center Plaza/Homespun Row/Hiroyuki Homes/, Hiroyuki Homes (), Peralta Development Corporation's Crestview Drive subdivision (), Peralta Development Corporation's Crestview Drive subdivision () A major fire destroyed much of downtown La Plata in 1976; however not all buildings were lost although several have since been demolished (). In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within city limits including: Crossroads Financial Center (), Park Place Estates (), Arboretum Village ()
