On February 14th 1850, Los Angeles was designated as the capital of California pursuant to Act of Statehood passed by the state legislature on March 4th of that year. On July 4th 1870 – four years after its designation – Leland Stanford purchased 9 square miles (23 km²) east of downtown from José María Cámpora for $10 per acre ($283 per hectare). At this point citrus fruit production became an important industry in Southern California because trees could be grown near reliable water supplies and there was little competition from other crops such as wheat or rice
Los Angeles is the most populous city in California and one of the most important commercial, cultural, and political centers in the United States. The metropolitan area has a population of 3.3 million people and spans almost all of Los Angeles County. The city is located on the southern coast of San Francisco Bay, between Angelenos living on the Pacific Ocean coastline to the east and inland valleys to the west. The first settlers in what is now Los Angeles County were Native American, who lived near present-day Beverly Hills and Culver City. In 1847, Mexican nationals arrived from Mexico with garlic, wild onions, chilies, mescal peppers, cocoa beans and other goods to trade for land within California. A small community was founded by Mariano Castilla as La Puente on an estuary near what is now downtown LA. By 1850, there were over 100 Mexicans living in LA proper; however., many left for economic reasons Wanting independence from Mexico under President José Joaquín de la Vega y Valdivia (1821-1850). In 1853–54 Mexican Americans formed a secret society called "los cisplatenses" or "the Californians." This group wanted control over all resources withinLOS ANGELES COUNTY before any new immigrants could arrive; they succeeded in getting their wish but at great cost to themselves. On November 10th 1855 a group of 8 men led by Captain John Cahuenga raided two stores belonging to Gabriel García Márquez (1859-1926) while he was traveling through LOS ANGELES COUNTY with his family.– One store was looted and GARCIA MÁRQUEZ suffered minor injuries when hit with a rock which broke his jawbone open; fortunately he was not killed or seriously injured.– After this eventMexican Americans began refer to themselves as “Cahuenga’s Battalion” throughout their stay inLA county.– On March 14th 1861angry citizens stormed intoLADY FERNANDEZ’S laundry room at 711 S Figueroa St after she refused to produce documentation proving her UPNaturalization status which would allow her greater access to education and shelter; ultimately 4 women were arrested (including 2 actresses) for disorderly conduct that day.– It should be noted that these arrests had nothing whatsoever do with race––the women were simply refusingto produce documentation that would have granted them certain rights such as voting privileges. The women spent several days in jail before being released without charge on condition they leave town.—After this incidentAngloamericans started calling Mexicans “chinos” or “Chinese” which created some confusion among local residents.--In 1863 JOSÉ PÉREZ BENITEZ becamemayor ofLA CIUDAD DE LOS ANGELES after defeating incumbent ANTONIO PALOMAR.- Benitez had previously been mayor of SAN FRANCISCO during the time period when Mexican Americans constituted most ofSAN FRANCISCO's population.– By 1870Los Angeles had become an increasingly Anglo-Saxon city due largely to its connection with railroads.—During World War II nearly half a million Japanese Canadians were interned here without trial becauseof anti-Japanese sentiment rampant throughout America.—Today Los Angeles remains one of America's most diverse cities With large numbersof people from various countries including Vietnamese immigrantsand Filipino refugees
