Los Altos quickly became known for its apple orchards and grapes; during the early 1800s it was one of the most important winegrowing areas in California. It also became an important center for education due to its excellent schools (the first high school opened in 1892). The native son of Angelenos Lorenzo Ventura and Maria Kodama Nunezfounded Western State Normal School (now UCLA) here in 1915. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese American citizens chose to move back into Los Angeles County where they had lived before internment during World War II – some settling near Compton and Watts neighborhoods while others chose more remote locations like Warner Springs or Topanga Canyon Village. Many old-time residents still live within blocks of their childhood homes today – including several generations of Sutters on busy Fourth Street between Vineyards Road and Sunrise Highway just north of Santa Monica Boulevard! Lorenzo Ventura High School closed abruptly in 1951 after only six months amid allegations that students were treated poorly by then- Principal Everett Dirksen due to political correctness concerns over race riots taking place throughout America at this time. Two years later Loyola University signed a Memorandum Of Agreement with Kitson & Co., Developers for the construction of an all-girls school adjacent to Boys High School on Beverly Hills Road (now making way for Regency Ballroom). That institution would become Westwood Girls’ High School! A fire destroyed much of downtown Los Angeles on November 14th 1966; fortunately no students were injured as a result thanks largely to heroic efforts by firefighters under guidance from captain Don Hahn who led Engine Company 5 alongonymously “The Angels” until his retirement soon afterwards! On January 1st 1932 Mayor Julius Rosenwald designated "One Hundred Forty Eighth Street" as the new business district boundary west of Sunset Boulevard which ran south from Broadway Avenue past Harbor Freeway/Mountain View Ave., thence east along One Hundred Forty Eighth Street/Broadway Avenue past Menlo Park Blvd./Folsom Blvd., thence south through Palo Alto Rd./Canyon Heights Rd., Carquinez Reservoir Rd./El Camino Real Secundo Blk./Palo Alto Dr.-Hirosaki Dr.-Glenn Mill Rd.-returning via Hirosaki Dr.–to One Hundred Forty Eight Street past East Palo Alto blk.," thus creating El Centro Business District." Recently this designation has been eliminated when Century City develops adjacent properties redevelopment has made it difficult towatch boundaries properly
