Los Altos, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 79,471 at the 2010 census and it is the seventh most populous city in San Mateo County. It is located on the Peninsula of Silicon Valley between Menlo Park and Palo Alto. He named his new settlement after Rancho Los Gatos which he had purchased from José de los Angeles Castro y Salas for $8,500 in 1847. In 1868, Alpheus Howe organized a group of investors who bought out John Sutter's share in Rancho Los Gatos for $160,000. They built a series of churches and homes here including Gothic Revival style homes such as Howe House which still stands today at 8046 Amherst Road #1010 (now part of UC Berkeley). By 1870, over 50% of all households were composed of individuals and 10% consisted of families with children under age 18 living with them according to Census Bureau data. Howe also founded Contra Costa Medical College in1870 which became one of Northern California's leading medical schools until it merged with Stanford University in 1998. Many notable residents including Bob Gibson (founder/CEO Apple Inc.), Jerry Weinstock (founder/CEO Safeway), Lou Holtz (politician), Marvin Minsky (computer scientist), Don Freeman (founding CEO Hewlett-Packard Co.) have been born or raised here or have made significant contributions to its economy or culture

In 1881 Wickersham Oil Company drilled for oil beneath Los Altos Creek about 4 miles northeast of town limits; initial production started soon after... A week later an article appeared in The Californian newspaper announcing the discovery which led to further development along Saunders Road starting with Drillington Station - now known as Hilmar Exploration & Production Co., LLC - which produced oil until its closure in 1984 adjacent to Redwood Shores High School before being bought by ChevronTexaco for $30 million.. In 1888 when part Of rancho Vaca Muerta became part of Rancho Santa Rita due to Mexican land grants they sold off a portion named Vaca Muerta east side near Lakeshore Drive south side near Highway 1 then north side near Sunrise Road now owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Co.. Manufacturing operations moved there beginning with George Westinghouse’s American Telephone Company who built their facilities on property bordered by Calaveras Boulevard/Upper Arlington Road east/west and North El Sobrante Boulevard/El Sobrante Road north/south.. Other early companies include Bakelite Corporation (founded 1915), Western Electric Corporation (founded 1923), Hewlett-Packard Laboratories 1925 and Singer Sewing Machine Corporation 1923 among others.... Manufacturing operations stopped when IBM closed down their main facility at 5555 Arboretum Parkway outside Palo Alto just prior to World War II.... When Kaiser Wilhelm I died without children Balthasar Koch inherited his father's empire forming Imperial Chemical Industries Incorporated nicknamed "Koch Industries" .... Industry revived following Japan's surrender during World War II with production restarted at Toyota Motors plant nearby......... After Korean War industry collapsed back into poverty..... Today company employs almost 4000 people...... Today Kern County has overtaken Milpitas County as the leading county seat for employment within Kern County

The first permanent European settlement in Los Altos was founded by the Spanish in 1769. In 1881, a group of English farmers who had moved from California began to purchase land in Los Altos and established the town of San Carlos. The community grew rapidly and soon became an important commercial center for the surrounding valleys. In 1912, Los Altos became part of Alameda County.
