The name came from two thousand small boulders that he found near his landing site on Hwy 101 between Menlo Park and Palo Alto. The small village which developed around this location was called Anza Heights after Juan Bautista de Anza's house which stood on top of a hill overlooking the site today. 1 st Lt George Armstrong Custer may have been born here on October 16th 1870 while stationed at Fort Baker during World War I 1 st Lt George Armstrong Custer was killed September 3rd 1919 while serving with America's forces in World War I
