Los Altos, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 24,693 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Fremont and Silicon Valley. The name "Los Altos" comes from two Spanish words: "los altos" meaning "the high ones", and "californios" meaning " Californians ". The town was founded in 1887 by John Caird and his brother-in-law George W. Sargent. In 1919, Los Altos became part of the City of Fremont. In 1925, Mayor John Prentice formed a committee to study ways to increase economic development in Los Angeles County by developing an area east of downtown that would become known as the East Side Area. On July 15, 1926, voters adopted Resolution No. 1, authorizing the formation of an east side community called Los Altos Hillsborough (later renamed Livermore). This resolution authorizes construction of a new civic center on what is now Airport Way and calls for its opening within 10 years with plans to have it completed by 1933. On November 17, 1929 residents approved Measure B which created the first district parallel to Interstate 680 between Livermore and Hayward Village; this led to development along I-680 south of Livermore through land speculation and annexation by other cities over time including Santa Clara County
