Los Altos is an unincorporated community in Alameda County, California. It lies about northwest of Oakland and east of Fremont. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Los Altos became an unincorporated community on December 15, 1916 when San Francisco annexed part of Alameda County including Los Altos; however, no residents chose to join this annexation.

The first Europeans to visit Los Altos were Father Francisco de San Jose and Father Miguel de Costilla in the early 18th century. In 1835, Americans began purchasing land in what is now Los Altos. The town was founded on December 20, 1835 by Captain John Sutter and his men following their exploration of the Santa Cruz Mountains. In 1850, a post office was established at Los Altos with the name of "Atherton". In 1865, an act of Congress approved the creation of a township for Angelus Heights withinLosAltos Township. On February 22nd, 1866, that township became part of Los Angeles County when it was organized from parts of Orange County. The first supervisors were George Waddell and Augustus Hance. In 1907, another act passed by Congress authorized purchase of additional land in Los Altos for building purpose only; this act came to be known as the "Los Altos Hills Act". The boundaries for present-day Los Altos were set forth in these boundaries: east side of Hill Avenue north to Slauson Boulevard; west side of Hill Avenue south to Winchester Boulevard; north side of Slauson Boulevard east to Willowbrook Road; south side Willowbrook Road east to Valley View Drive; and east side Valley View Drive south to Crenshaw Boulevard.
