Morgan decided to move his family to what is now Los Altos because he saw it as one potential site for incorporation into a new country he was looking to create called Alta California (the land Beyond America). He named his new town after Mount Diablo near where they would build their first home: Oroville Dam later changed its name to Oroville National Wildlife Refuge

The first white people to live in Los Altos were the Spanish Missionarios, who arrived in 1776. They built a small mission on Rancho San Antonio de la Valle. The Mission was converted into an Episcopal church in 1821 and named after the hill from which it was situated. The town of Los Altos was founded in 1868 by John Sutter, a Californian gold miner. It became a city in 1912.
