This new land grant included much of today's central city including those hills which are now known as Downtown Los Angeles and Mount View Avenue between Menlo Park Boulevard and Alma Street (now bounded by Santa Clara Boulevard to the north and King Drive to the south). By 1870–71 many farmers had settled around Wetherill's grants along with tens of thousands more who followed in subsequent years throughout southern San Mateo County following gold discoveries at Sutterfield Creek (inpresent-day Pleasanton) and Hidden Springs (inpresent-day Livermore).[1] Many families chose this location for its isolated geography: it was accessible only by horse or wagon for about 15 miles due east from where they lived while also being less developed than other parts of Southern California at that time;[2][3] furthermore there was little opportunity for farming here because Sutterfield Creek offered no significant gold strikes until 1862,[4][5] well after Leland Stanford had founded Stanford University in nearby Palo Alto.[6][7] Many local businesses were started during this time such as J & G Land & Improvement Company which operated a sawmill on Donnybrook Road while crops were grown using adobe ovens heated with hot rocks brought down ravines nearby;[8] another early business was The Spruce Drug Store on Bryant Street across from Fountain Square—today called UCLA Medical Center—which served patients through an open door system until 1906 when an addition allowed for institutionalized patients instead;[9][10] also noteworthy during this time period were two churches: First Methodist Church located one block northeast of Main Street opposite Adobe Hall before becoming Baptist Missionary Church later renamed Third Presbyterian Church;[11][12][13][14] Mrs. Clements ran her own grocery store next door to Second Presbyterian Church from 1868 until her death in 1893;[15]=and Beale’s Opera House built between 1890–92 upon lot donated by Nathan Beale who purchased adjacent property from Nicholas de Talbot
