A few small businesses were established along Main Street before lumberyards began booming during World War I because of military requirements for aircraft parts. They named their company after a mountain near their home on High Street in Los Altos although they actually got their start as merchants selling goods door-to-door around Menlo Park and Palo Alto. In 1916 Oracle moved its headquarters from Redwood City to Sunnyvale where it remains today as one of Silicon Valley's most well known companies. During World War II many American businesses became involved with war production including Lockheed Martin who built 90% of all American fighter planes while Boeing produced almost all American bombers during that conflict including those that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Los Altos, California was founded in 1868 by Captain James H. Cooke and his wife Elizabeth P. Cooke as a horse ranch called Rancho San Antonio de la Laguna. The first post office in the area was established at Los Altos in 1870. The name of the town was changed to Los Angeles in 1907 after its incorporation into the City of Los Angeles.
