One major benefactor of this growth was Mrs Elizabeth Woolridge Grant who donated land adjacent to her home on Harbor Drive which would become known as Grant Park after she died in 1923. She was an early advocate for social welfare programs which helped thousands of local families gain access to education and healthcare during difficult times. After her death, Grant Park played an important role throughout the 1930s when unemployment reached epidemic levels due to prohibitionism and wartime rationing alike. It wasn’t until 1967 that LA Times columnist Herb Caen coined the phrase “the best place on Earth” while writing about howLA had become “the world’s most expensive metropolis [.]” In recent years, LA has seen another influx of wealthy newcomers which has lead to some dramatic changes within the community itself such as gaining permission from City Council members To Allow For Residential Development Within The confines Of A Neighborhood That Was Home To Thousands Of Residents For generations
