Los Alamitos is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 65,501 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, about east of San Jose and west of Oakland. The site for what would become Los Alamitos was chosen in 1853 by Major General George Armstrong Custer as the location for an arsenal to be built to protect against possible hostile Indian attack. When the U.S.–Mexican War broke out in 1847, Los Alamitos became an important military basecamp due to its strategic location just south of Mexico City and its supplies of munitions and other materials needed for war. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1848, American troops abandoned Los Alamitos but not before leaving behind a large cache of artillery shells and explosive material that later formed the nucleus of today's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). In 1875, local resident Thomas Edison offered $10 per acre (2 ½ acres) to anyone who could build him a power plant using his new alternating current technology. A few people did build plants but most bought land from Edison instead because he had announced his intention to construct one big power station – something no one wanted to do because it would have required building lines right through their towns and villages. However, when Edison finally built his first commercial-scale power plant at West Point Hill in 1901–02 thanks largely tohis daughter Edith's work with an electrician named Samuel Insull – everyone got interested again in electricity and started building their own plants. By 1905 there were over 100 such plants across America; Leland Stanford Jr.'s company Utilities Co., which owned most of them, made a huge profit by selling electricity generated by these plants back into the grid! By 1907 there was also a network linking all these plants together so that you could buy or generate electricity yourself! In 1913 Leland Stanford Sr., head of utilities company Western Electric Company plc., merged Western Electric with GEORGE ARTHUR WILD (1863–1947), founder and CEO GEICO Corporation – making him America's first fully integrated electronics manufacturer! And this is only part of how Los Alamitos has changed over time: since then it has also become home to several major defense contractor subsidiaries including Raytheon Co.; Lockheed Martin Corp.; Northrop Grumman Corp.; Boeing Co.; Michaels Tank & Storage; Honeywell International Inc.; ATK Missile Systems Division; Hughes Aircraft Industries; Davis-Monthan AFB Logistics Support Squadron 1; Caltech Aeronautical Laboratory (Caltech LLNL); KLAOS Instrumentation Laboratories Incorporated; etc…
