The history of target holders in Los Alamitos, California began with the creation of the original Target Hanger in 1923. This structure was designed to help organize and storage firearms for use at local gun shows. The Target Hanger became a popular spot for shooters to practice their shooting skills, as well as collect targets. In 1952, the first Targets Unlimited Shootout was held at the old ammunition plant across from Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. At this event, many new shooters started using target holders to Practice Shooting drills and aim shots. In 1974, a new Target Holder Building was built on land adjoining Los Alamitos Naval Air Station. This building served as both a shooting range and storage for firearms during air-to-air missile tests conducted by the Navy. The Targets Unlimited Shootout continued to be held at this location until 1984 when it moved to another site within Navy property located near Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. After more than 40 years of operation, Targets Unlimited has decided that it is time to move its operations permanently to its current location on State Route 34 in neighboring Pahrump Valley. The company will continue making available its high-quality targets and ammo products through our three stores locations: Pahrump Valley; Thousand Oaks; and Claremont Hills (in North Hollywood). In honor of Targets Unlimited’s long history of hosting top caliber shootouts throughout Southern California, we are proud to offer a special price on all tickets during their “TargetsUNlimited 50th Anniversary Celebration” event on Saturday July 10th! All General Admission tickets are $135 which includes unlimited shot times from 12pm – 6pm inside the venue only! Los Alamitos was founded by George Washington and his men in 1795. It became a U.S. military base during World War II and is now home to the Los Alamitos National Laboratory, one of the top research institutions in the United States. The area where Los Alamitos now stands was first inhabited by Native American tribes and was used as a hunting ground by Spanish colonists in the 16th century. In 1846, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living within five miles of his army’s encampment at Topeka to leave for fear they would help attack invading Mexican troops. With no other option, many of these natives retreated to Los Alamitos, where they began farming breadfruit trees and raising chickens. A few years later, Captain John Holliday founded Holliday’s Rancho Nevada de la Salinas on what is now part of downtown Los Alamitos. This rancho included land that would eventually become Los Alamitos National Laboratory. After California attained statehood in 1850, San Francisco offered its share of land for a military post so that it could be defended from attacks by Mexico if necessary; however, no post was ever established at this location because of lack of funds. In 1854, General Winfield Scott appointed Major George Stephenson as headmaster/director of Academy Hill School near present-day Hollywood Boulevard in order to provide more opportunities for boys than girls to receive an education outside Ofallon Township (which then lay adjacent to Topeka). When Scott left America for Spain in 1861, Stephenson continued helping run Academy Hill School until 1865 when he resigned due to health concerns about duty abroad instead of returning home soon enough to take over the school proper. By 1870 almost everyone who lived within five miles either east or west of Academy Hill had deserted their homes and joined forces with Lieutenant James Folsom who had taken command from Stephenson at Kelly’s Post on July 1st; this move marked the beginning stage of what would become known as “the Alamo Campaign” which lasted until December 1871 when LtCol Folsom surrendered without any fight after being outnumbered three-to-one by Mexican troops under General Manuel Micheltorena at Villa Clara New Mexico
Los Alamitos was founded in 1853 by George Washington Goodwin. Goodwin and his partner, John C. Maxwell, were the first to build a permanent settlement in what is now Los Alamitos County, California. The site of present day Los Alamitos was selected for its natural resources and strategic location as a staging ground for wagon trains heading southward across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By 1850, Goodwin had extensive land holdings in the area that made him one of the wealthiest men in California. In 1851 he laid out an agricultural town called El Centennial which quickly grew into a thriving community with several stores and homes. In 1870, Goodwin donated $10,000 to establish what is now Cal Poly Pomona College. The town's growth did not stop there though; throughout the late 19th century and well into the 20th century, Los Alamitsos continued to grow rapidly as a center of education and industry. Today, it remains one of los Angeles' most vibrant communities with presence both within its borders (Cal Poly Pomona) as well as beyond (the city of Pasadena).
