Los Alamitos is a city in Southern California, United States. The population was 24,871 at the 2010 census. Los Alamitos is located on the eastern edge of San Diego County and on the southern border of Orange County. It is bordered by Gillespie Heights to the northwest, El Cajon to the northeast, Fountain Valley to the southeast, and Poway to the southwest. The first evidence for human habitation in Los Alamitos dates back to 775 AD when two Spanish ships were stranded onshore there after being lost off California's coast. A group of Indians called Tootoolew (later known as Alamo) helped them find their way back home and spread news of Spain's arrival around San Diego Bay. In 1829, Captain John Ransom founded what would become Pasadena with land he bought from Ransom's former employer, Commodore James Kelleher. At its peak in 1885-1886, Pasadena had a population of about 20,000 people and employed 300 workers at its three banks; today it has a population of only 12,500 people and employs only 2 workers at its three banks combined! After years of growth within Pasadena proper – thanks largely to construction projects such as Western Avenue Extension – large chunks of adjacent neighborhoods like Boyle Heights and Chinatown began popping up along Bunker Hill Road between Flower Street (west side) and Colorado Boulevard (east side). This area now forms part of downtown LA. In 1908–1909 local banker Jerald Harry Hughes purchased 8 acres north/northwest of his original bank building at Seventh Street & Orchard Avenue from David Sarnoff for $2 million dollars ($ in current value). He named his property "Los Alamitos" after General George Armstrong Custer's army base near Omaha where he had served as an officer during World War I (& later re-taught tactics there!). Hughes built one or more homes on his land until 1914 when he sold it all but one acre to Hiram Maxim who founded Maxim Oil Company Ltd.. With oil well drilling becoming increasingly common throughout America during this period (& production increasing rapidly at both Union Pacific Railroad’s Oil Field #1 & Shell’s Elk Hills Refinery #4), Los Angeles quickly became interested in acquiring Maxims land so that it could be developed into an oil capital city! On May 10th 1915 Leland Stanford Jr., founder & CEO of Stanford University – then still based in Palo Alto – met with Hiram Maxim about possible annexation into Los Angeles due to dramatic growth within Stanfords' own Palo Alto campus since their purchase 5 years earlier! According to sources: "It was agreed that if ever Greater Los Angeles should become corporately organized through incorporation under a single name—a proposition which won favor with Mr. [Hiram] Maxim—the settlement then proposed for annexing Maxims lands would certainly receive prompt consideration." After some contention over boundaries among those already living eastside & westside…Stanford finally got his wish!! When Measure H was placed on November 3rd 1920 against objections from many citizens including Mayor Fletcher[sic], Supervisor Park[al], Mrs.[Lela] Norris[sic]…founder Leland Stanford Sr.'s initials appeared conspicuously upon each ballot paper!!" The City Council voted unanimously on December 1st 1920 not only annexing Maxims land but also giving him title deeds creating what would eventually be known as "Maxim Village". Today Maxwell Village remains primarily unincorporated although portions are included within Downtown LA proper limits! On March 17th 1922 General Electric Co.] announced plans for an enormous new factory just southward Of Huntington Beach Blvd., bounded by Orangeline Rd., La Brea Ave., Huntington Dr.–producing electrical equipment valued at $1 billion!!!!!!! For those keeping score here we have GE making major announcements while our townspeople Struggle To Keep THEIR Homes….. What went wrong???????????
