Los Alamitos (Spanish: Almagro) is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the San Gabriel Valley, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown LA and 25 miles (40 km) north of Pasadena. The name "Almagro" comes from Spanish explorer Antonio López de Legazpi's 1519 expedition to California. A post office called Rancho Cucamonga was established at this site in 1827. In 1839, Alta Californiana became part of Mexico when its capital was moved to Mexico City; Alta California then became part of the United States following Mexican independence in 1848. In 1850s two waves of immigrants arrived from Germany: Lutheran missionaries and their families and others seeking land west of the Mississippi River. By 1860 there were over 100 German-owned businesses operating in what is now Downtown LA; they were mostly small shops catering to farmers or ranchers near Arroyo Seco and Waterman Roads. One group led by entrepreneur John Sutter started an early brewery here that became one of America's largest brewers with operations stretching from Burbank to Elysian Heights across four states before shutting down during Prohibition era due to heavy regulation by New York State regulators
Los Alamitos was founded in 1867 by Captain George Washington Goodwin as a small trading post on the Kern River. The site was chosen because of its strategic location, being able to control access to the important San Gabriel River Valley and its resources. The post grew rapidly, and by 1881 it had become an important military supply depot for California Union forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1912, Los Alamitos became an independent city after voting by residents to do so unanimously. In World War II, Los Alamitos played a significant role in the development of America's nuclear weapons program. As part of Project Bikini Atoll, Los Alamitos played a leading role in developing and testing submarines that would deliver nuclear warheads to Japan.
