In 1957, when Southern California Edison dumped millions of gallons (miles) of water onto Topanga Canyon as part of efforts to reduce generation emissions from its power plants, high winds caused a major fire that burned for days throughout southern Ventura County including parts of los Alamitos; two homes were destroyed but no people were injured as a result of the fire or the wind storm which produced extreme turbulence across much southern California (see also: "Howling Winds"). Owing to these eventsLos Alamitos experienced significant growth due to multiple factors including an increasing demand for housing in an area that had few available parcels and easy access to transportation including both local buses/taxis and Interstate 5 freeway access. By 1990 it had reached its current size with 45 buildings totaling 242 units totaling some 2 million square feet (~100,000 m2). Los Alamitos is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. The two brothers had emigrated from Georgia to Los Angeles in 1845 looking for a better life and they soon realized that they could not find what they were looking for in Southern California. They started a grocery store and sold produce from their vehicle while driving around town. Soon enough, other people in the town started doing the same thing, selling products from their homes as well. In 1851, when some researchers working on an experimental gunpowder project at Caltech decided to move to Pasadena instead of going through the process of acquiring land inlosable for agriculture (the only way then to get reliable supplies of powder), they called on local farmers and founded the Pasadena Gun Club which met monthly at various public buildings until December 8th 1860 when it moved its meetings to William Lowrey's storage shed because there was no building available that met their needs." In 1881 Los Alamitos joined with nearby Hanford City as one municipality under the government control of placer goldmining operation Imperial Goldfields Limited bringing with it many new residents including Jules Verne who arrived during this time period." "The first townsite was laid out by Captain John Sutter who surveyed Rancho San Rafael near present-day Westlake Village on January 12th 1847." "Captain Sutter's plat included five square miles gridiron bounded by Tulare Creek on the north; Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the east; Olympic Boulevard south; and Orange Avenue west." “It seems likely that Captain Sutter’s plat also included what is now downtown Los Alamitos. He surveyor reported: “I have located within my limits several prospecting properties lying northwest corner of Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Huntington Park Road near Orange Street junction and Hollywood Boulevard … upon scrutiny I am satisfied these are all bona fide mineral lands embraced within my plat according to true Surveying Practice generally followed up hereabouts….All round about these prospects I found numerous small veins or lodes correspondent with those disclosed upon examination by me being worth more than $6 an ounceUranium ore has been located at various points throughout this locality but although much larger quantities were discovered in certain parts where lodes had approached 500 pounds weight per tonUranium ores have not yet been found worth more than $2 per pound cash value"
