The Los Alamitos National Laboratory (LANL) is a federally funded research center located in Los Alamitos, California. The city's first post office opened on December 3rd, 1861 with three mail sacks filled with letters from Union soldiers fighting in the Civil War: "To All Our Soldiers In The Service Of The United States" by Capt.(Ldr.) John Cranch Hennessy and Lt.(Lt.) Augustus Blythe; "To My Dear Wife And Children" by Capt.(Capt.) James Fenton Ransom; and " Christmas Message To Your Families" by Lieut.(Colonel) Lewis Waddell Kingsbury. On January 1st 1865 – two days after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House along with all Confederate forces loyal to him (except for four companies that surrendered at Danville). On April 12th 1865 – just one day after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – General Edward Hoke accepted control of Southern California from Mexico under terms known as Rancho Verde Treaty #2 . That same day saw the closure of Leland Stanford's Central Pacific Railroad due to financial troubles within that company which followed years of speculation about whether or not such railroads could be built through portions of southern California watersheds currently occupied by chaparral forest habitats containing high levels (>50% cover)of silver content (silver mines had been discovered near this region since 1868). In 1853, Los Alamitos became the site of one of the first think tanks in California when it opened its doors to members of the Sacramento Academy of Sciences. In 1897, the University of California at Los Angeles was founded at Los Alamitos and soon after, research laboratories were established here as well. The Laboratory Schools program grew out of this work and eventually included a college-level course in science and technology. The Laboratory Schools also helped lay the groundwork for UCLA's current faculties in sciences and engineering. The Atomic Energy Commission was established at Los Alamitos in 1945 as part of President Harry Truman's efforts to secure American atomic weapons capability. This led to further research on nuclear physics and technology here at Los Alamitos until finally closure in 1974.
