Los Alamitos, California is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The site of present-day Los Alamitos was first settled by Native Americans in 1769. They were followed by stagecoach drivers and miners who found rich gold and silver deposits near the center of what would become Los Alamitos. The townsite was laid out by Fernando Rivera in 1871 as an incorporated village under the name "Alamitos". In 1906, Alameda County was established and Alamitos became one of its original jurisdictions. In 1945, during World War II, Alameda County's then-Governor Earl Warren ordered the closure of all remaining concentration camps in California; Alamitos had been spared because it did not have any camps on its own soil. The community grew rapidly after that decision and doubled its population over ten years to reach 2,000 residents by 1960. During the 1970s and 1980s, Alameda County experienced rapid growth due to new industrial development including semiconductor manufacturing plants such as Intel and AMD; however, this growth slowed after several devastating fires destroyed homes and businesses in 1984 and 1985 respectively
