A mission was erected there on November 7, 1795 by Father Junípero Serra and Father Pedro Fonseca under military escort led by Captain José Joaquín de Balboa y Valdés. By 1836, the town had been renamed "Alamogordo" after General Santa Anna's Mexican War campaign against Spanish forces near modern-day Bakersfield. In 1849–1850 during various campaigns against Native American villages north of Lake Tahoe , MajorGeneral Winfield Scott ordered Major James Callahan to march his brigade through this area to open up communications with Sacramento . He discovered an abandoned village and called for artillery bombardment; within minutes he reported back to headquarters that the village had been burned down by natives who fled before he arrived! callahan then organized an infantry column under Col John C. Frémont which marched into camp just outside present day Los Alamitos at what would become known as Camp Kearny - home of today's University of Southern Californias Music Department - arriving on July 26th 1849 In 1851–1852 Lieutenant Colonel David Sutter built Fort Point on land east of present day downtown Los Angeles while skirmishing with Native Americans northeast of Yosemite National Park .
