Los Alamitos, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,631 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Los Alamitos" comes from two places: one is in Alamo Heights near downtown Los Angeles and the other is an old Spanish rancho called Rancho Los Alamitos de la Reina Blanca. The first place likely got its name because of how well cannon balls would bounce off the rocky outcroppings nearby; this made it difficult for invading Mexican forces to capture or kill the American Indians living there. The second place received its name because white men who had bought and platted much of what are now Riverside County started calling themselves "Alamitos," after their hometown of Alamo City, Texas (now Austin). So when General Mariano Moreno sent his force against Pio Pico on December 27, 1847 while based at Fort Yuma on Lower Sonoma Mountain outside Tucson, Arizona to quash Mexican independence efforts and take over that territory as part of his larger campaign against Mexico, he ordered his men not to fire upon Mexican civilians until they were actually Indian warriorsinstead of just muleteers and stagecoaches coming through their area looking for gold mines and herds of cattle! Mormon missionaries were also active in early Los Angeles during this time period. Father Francisco Javier de Jesús Menéndez y Valdés arrived here from Mexico City in 1847 with sixteen members of his religious order as missionaries known as " los Padres", or "the Fathers." He founded what is now Nuestra Señora del Rosario Parish Church in 1848 east of Downtown Los Angeles which became home to many high-ranking Mormon leaders including Brigham Young who served as patriarch from 1855 until 1872 after moving westward from Nauvoo Illinois where he had been governor since 1840. In 1850 Las Palmas de Granada Presbyterian Church was organized near present day Grapeland Boulevard & Via La Brea Avenue with Reverend James Hyrum Smith filling Sacred Heart Chapel following a service conducted by Father Manuel López Rodríguez on July 16th 1850. It was founded on July 16, 1885 by members of the Los Alamitos National Laboratory and became an incorporated city on December 5, 1912. The name comes from the first two words in the acronym for American Physical Society - LAS - Laboratory of Standards and Technology. The laboratory was founded in 1867 as the United States Naval Observatory at Annapolis, Maryland by Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison and Captain John Winthrop Fuller. Morison had been instrumental in developing naval artillery during the Napoleonic Wars and was also interested in scientific research. In 1893, Commodore George Dewey appointedMorison to lead a committee to investigate possible sources of energy for ships afloat. The report submitted to Dewey recommended that warships be powered by steam engines provided they were limited to cruising speeds not exceeding 12 knots (19 km/h). This recommendation led to development of the electric engine, which would later be used on ships such as USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Constitution (CV-1). In 1912, Los Alamitos became an incorporated city with its own government under the laws of California. On December 5th, 1912 it adopted a resolution proclaiming itself "the City of Los Alamitos" within its limits. After years of growth and progress throughout most of downtown Los Angeles County - including much annexation into other cities such as Pasadena and Burbank - Orange County's only municipally organized county seat began rapidly becoming increasingly out-of-reach for Angelenos seeking access to their largest city east of San Francisco Bay Area residents living westward continued expanding southward until they constituted nearly all metropolitan area residents except West Hollywood enclave formed within Hollywood boundaries between those municipalities while still comprising part or all unincorporated partsakes areas eastern portions Pasadena exclave among other adjoining cities largely unpopulated rural agricultural country now known as Orange County
