Los Alamitos, California is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 44,552 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north, Fresno to the east, and Tulare County to the south. The name Los Alamitos comes from Spanishmeaning "the two mountains" or "the two peaks." The first settlement in this area was made on July 24th of 1847 when three men named George Stephenson, Captain David Dixon and John Sutter founded a small cabin near present-day East Temperance Road and Pascagoula Creek. They named their cabin after Jameson's Hill in Scotland which they had seen while traveling through that country. In 1853, Alameda Township was organized with a core of people who were farmers and ranchers along Pascagoula Creek. This area included land that now includes much of Los Alamitos as well as Healdsburg and Westmount neighborhoods today. In 1856, an act known as the Donation Land Act became effective providing for a select group of Californians to purchase Rancho Cucamonga from Mexico for $15 million dollars (equal to about $2 million today). The grant would be split among many individuals including namesake Dr George Washington Carver who would own more than half of it. In 1862 during America's Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant ordered his forces destroyed at Cottonwood Gap near Salt Lake City by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Jenson because he felt they posed no threat to his army retreating eastward across Arizona Territory under General Douglas MacArthur. At that location Genl Ulysses S Grant stopped short of engaging Confederate forces commanded by Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson where they dug into defense positions overlooking cotton fields on what is now called Lone Mountain Road southeast of downtown Los Angeles; this event is commemorated by a marker on I-5 just outside Glendale CA
