The town began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location and economic importance as a tie between San Francisco Bay Area (the eastern side) and Southern California. By 1886 it had a population of 1,500 people and became an incorporated city under the laws of that year. In 1912 Citizens’ Association president Drury Copley donated land in downtown Los Alamitos for use as a public school district;[2] this opened up new opportunities for growth for the city when other inner-city schools were closed because of World War I enrollment levels.[3] In 1949 Los Alamitos became one of five towns [] west of PasadenaParticipating in the metropolitan area plan established by then-President Harry Truman,[4][5] it experienced rapid growth following incorporation with over 100 businesses opening their doors within two decades.
