Los Alamitos is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 97,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Los Alamitos were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They named it "Alamitos" after two mountains in New Spain—the Alumno Hills and the San Gabriel Mountains. The area that now makes up Los Alamitos was originally inhabited by Mono people who huntedand gathered wild plants and animals there for food. In 1827, General Antonio López de Santa Anna moved his army from Monterey to Stockton because of the Mexican–American War and discovered what would become Los Angeles County while on its way to battle Santa Anna at Chihuahua City. He named this new region "Alamitos". A year later, he founded Mission San José de Buenaventura (1828) on Rancho Rinconada near present-day downtown Los Angeles and established landowning households as friars to populate the area with European missionary families; these families founded missions such as Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1829), Nuestra Señora del Carmen (1830), La Purísima Concepción (1832), Don José Ortega y Gasset's Convent of Our Lady of Guadalupe (1835). In 1849, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico ceded all but California to United States; America acquired most of Central America through war with Mexico and this included parts of what are now Ventura and Orange counties including what is now los Alamitos east side., so although Alameda County was not directly annexed into California until 1850, development began there much earlier than anywhere else in the territory.. In 1847–48 an American surveyor named Nathaniel Swayne surveyed millsdamaged by a fire at Banff Mills just outside town on Redwood Creek where modern-day Interstate 10 begins; he found water available only south of Maple Ave., so called Walnut Valley because many walnuts trees grew there then. As a result of this discovery local farmers built dams upstream on Cedar Creek to create reservoirs for irrigation purposes which supported early citrus groves around today's junction of Pico Boulevard/Redondo Avenue/ Union Pacific Railroad tracks north of downtown Los Angeles. A grant from Bishop George Smith helped build St Ignatius' Church (now Cathedral Basilica) between Banff Mill Dam & Pico Boulevard in 1851 along with Saint John's School & College soon afterwards also within blocks east on Union Pacific tracks across Main Street from Cathedral Basilica-- latter building still standing & used as an elementary school until 1992 when it became Angeleno State University--with Father Edward Meehan appointed rector in 1863 becoming one among very few Catholic clergymen ever appointed headmaster or principal instructor at public schools throughout California during Reconstruction Era following US Civil War... formal annexation followed by city charter granted November 15th 1861 creating "Los Angeles County" comprising 7 townships: Vallejo proper (& other eastern towns added over time)--then(like many Southern Californian cities) Municipalities Boards passed ordinances granting special privileges Beachhead Park Heights Huntington Park West Covina North Hollywood Culver CityEl Centro Harriman Valleyvilna
There has been a long and varied history of gun lights. Los Alamitos was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver, a American scientist and agriculturalist. The town was named for the two natural uranium deposits found near it, one in the hills to the east and one in the hills to the west. The townsite was first settled by farmers and their families who used horses and burros to transport goods overland from Santa Fe. By 1850, Los Alamitos had a population of about 100 people. In 1860, when California became an state, Los Alamitos became part of San Diego County. The city's growth continued until World War II when it experienced a large influx of munitions workers due to its proximity to the strategic B-29 bombing range. During World War II, Los Alamitos produced more than 1 million pounds of explosives and other munitions. After war ended, many refugees discovered that they could not return home because their homes were confiscated by the government during wartime rationing. Although many properties were never re-owned or developed as housing prices rose in Los Alamitos during postwar years, some vestiges of its early growth remain today including several small shopping malls as well as numerous historical sites that are open to the public.
