The name "Los Alamitos" comes from two words: los (meaning "the") and alamitos (meaning "spruce"). Los Alamitos was founded on July 4, 1871 by George Armstrong Custer and his family as Camp Grant. In 1879, he established Los Alamitos Mines and Manufacturing Company to produce lead ore for ammunition production during the American Civil War. A year later, he organized Rancho las Alamedas with land hereabouts that became part of what is now downtown Los Angeles when it was annexed by Los Angeles in 1881. On May 22nd, 1886, General James H. Wilson's 7th Cavalry Regiment attacked an Apache raiding party led by José Joaquín de la Guerra at Chiavari Creek just south of present-day DowntownLos Angeles; about 100 Indians were killed or captured including Custer himself; this event is also documented as marking the beginning of military action along what would become known as the Santa Monica Mountains (see map). In 1919, Leslie Rolfe Reid purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 km²) of land across from Pershing Drive which would become home to Reid's Laboratory for Radiochemistry which operated until 1942 when it moved to University Park after World War II because of wartime concerns about radioactivity. In 1951 it merged with Columbia University's Institute for Radioactive Research to form Columbia University Radiation Lab where plutonium testing began on February 14th 1945 with Japanese pilot Nagasaki Kokura test flying a plutonium bomb over Tokyo Bay using an airplane provided by United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Hollis Cunningham

The history of Los Alamitos began with George Washington Hill's purchase of 640 acres (248 hectares) near what is now downtown Los Angeles in 1847. Hill Wanted to make sure that his land would be available for farming so that he could provide food for the burgeoning city of LA and its growing population. Hill soon realized that there were many opportunities for development in this new frontier town - especially if he could find backers to help him get started. He enlisted the help of his friend Eli Whitney who already owned some farmland in South Pasadena and helpedHill build up early production plants at his rancho la Brea Vista on Long Beach Boulevard just east of downtown LA On January 4th, 1850, President James K Polk signed an executive order creating the United States Department of Commerce which would play an important role in helping to growLA into one of America’s most important economic engines during the mid-19th century In 1851, one year after President Polk had signed that order, George Washington Hill moved from New York City to live in LA and start developing what would become known as “Los Alamitos Rancho La Brea Vista” . It was here that he developed plans for building two atomic weapons labs – one inside his home and another outside on private property adjacent to where modern day Hollywood is located today .
