In 1902, local businessmen George Wickersham and Harry Chandler bought 1,500 acres (510 ha) of land around what are now los alamitos high school and community center; they renamed it "Los Alamitos". The first home in the town was built on May 15, 1903 by Mrs. Ada Morley Wright of Manchester England who brought back five live camels from her trip across the border in search of a new home after her husband's death while serving in Arizona during World War I A post office called "Alamitos" opened in 1907 and remained open until1992 when it merged into the more common "Los Angeles". A fire destroyed much of downtown Los Angeles on November 24, 1910 which has been cited as one of the worst fires ever seen in America; however according to some reports over 50% different buildings were saved without any loss or damage due to arson control measures put into place at that time including night patrols by volunteer firefighters and compulsory education classes teaching people how to extinguish fires using ladders
