In 1892, Los Alamitos was established as a small town in southern California. The town was founded by Captain George Armstrong Custer, during the gold rush days of 1849. At the time, Los Alamitos was known as "the Sleeping Giant" because it lay on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and remained largely unoccupied for months at a time due to the fear that malaria might spread through the area. The discovery of oil in California in 1901 led to an increased demand for firearms, which led to an increase in production and sales of firearms throughout America. In 1903, Captain Custer purchased a gun factory in Reno, Nevada which he used to produce firearms for military purposes. He also began producing hats with his company name on them, beginning what would become known as "Custer's Hat Company." The Second World War brought an increased demand for handguns and rifles across all industries, including firearm manufacturers. In 1945, Captain Custer died suddenly from a heart attack while driving back home from Reno to see his son who had joined the US Air Force. His hat company continued production until 1949 when it merged with another handgun manufacturer to form Browning Firearms Corporation. That same year saw the first use of nuclear weapons in warfare when United States Strategic Bombing Survey crews detonated two atomic bombs over Japan without warning General Douglas MacArthur or anyone else within range. This event is widely considered to have saved Japan from total destruction during World War II and helped prevent further damage being done to Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Los Alamitos was a small town in Kern County, California, United States, located about 30 miles (48 km) east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. The name "Los Alamitos" comes from the two main hills in town—Alamita Peak to the south and Mount San Antonio to the north—and from being near county seat of Kern County. The townsite lay on what had been an agricultural district that included parts of present-day Kern and Tulare Counties since Rancho San Bernardino de Anza granted land to James Sutter in 1849. In 1881, when work began on Hoover Dam at nearby Lake Tahoe and development in central California accelerated due to new discoveries including gold, Los Alamitos became one of many small communities boomtowns dotting the developing valley around Carson City; other notable examples include Arroyo Seco and Yuma. In 1915 a group of scientists working for General Electric founded GE High Voltage Research Laboratory here as part of their effort to develop new types of alternating current (AC) power transmission lines across America's interior mountainsides; this lab would later become GE PowerSouth Europe before merging with American Electric Power in 1977 to form GE Energy Company. Los Alamitos played a role in both world wars through its Naval Weapons Station Atoll Air Force Base). During World War II defense contractor Westinghouse developed plutonium for use by the U.S., ending up stockpiling more than twice as much plutonium as any other country; it still stores some plutonium today off-shore off southern California under various names including Southwestern Plutonium Company LLC and Westinghouse Torpedoed Uranium Company LLC Nevada). A windfarm has been proposed next to downtown Los Angeles which will be built by NRG Renewables
