Los Alamitos is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 27,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Santa Cruz metropolitan area. La Puente Canyon Dam was built on the Tulare River by the United States Army Corps of Engineers between 1943 and 1945 as part of Project El Dorado. The city was founded by farmers in 1859 who named it Los Alamitos after General George Armstrong Custer's troops destroyed a Indian village near what is now downtown Los Alamitos during their march from Sacramento to Yreka. The community grew slowly until about 1880 when there were about 10 residents. In 1892, local physician and real estate developer Drury Eager laid out streets that still run east-west in La Puente Valley northwest of downtown Los Alamitos. He also subdivided land into lots for sale and built a two-story frame house on East Colorado Avenue (now West Market Street). The town began to grow rapidly after it became known for its high quality white cotton Textile Mills products exported to other parts of America such as Europe and Asia. Cotton mills closed in the early 1920s but continued to produce textiles until they closed in 1970 most due to competition from synthetic fibers coming online at this time including polyester plants subsidized by government intervention through interstate commerce acts like Interstate Commerce Commission Acts 158 and 161 which created "the modern" industrial economy with large companies providing employment opportunities for people living within commuting distance while large companies outsourced operations outside those commuting distances often locating adjacent rural areas where labor could be found more cheaply or simply moving production facilities entirely away from cities altogether as happened with Steel Foundry Company located just south of downtown LOS ANGELES, California; Rubber Products Corporation located just west of downtown LOS ANGELES; Chlorine bleach plant at Canoga Park north west corner OGDEN ROAD & PALM AVENUE; Textile Mill #2 located on present day Depot Road northeast corner First Street east side) . These company towns typically grew rapidly because many small farmers were able to build houses on vacant lots or purchase them from developers who had bought these lands since before statehood which allowed agricultural production without having to go through an irrigation system or deal with counties or municipalities which interfered with business enterprises
Los Alamitos was founded in 1852 by three men who pooled their money and set out to build a new town on the banks of the Santa Susana River. The town grew quickly, and in 1876 it became an incorporated city. Los Alamitos was one of the first U.S. cities to install streetlights, and it is home to both the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and SpaceX, which has been making space launches since 2006.
