Los Alamitos is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 23,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Los Alamitos" comes from Spanish for "The Two Cities." The city was founded in 1871 by German-American railroad entrepreneurs Wilhelm and Ferdinand von Siemens and their families as part of an effort to create new industrial areas east of downtown Los Angeles. They named the community after two ancient Egyptian cities: Almagro and Ahunrubi. In 1881, the City Council voted to change its name to Los Angeles after being accepted into what was then called the American Federation of Labor (AFL). In 1924, most of present-day Pasadena were annexed by Los Angeles; however, some residents in eastern Pasadena continued to call themselves "Pasadena," even though they had no connection with that city or county. In 1928, when Hollywood began expanding rapidly eastward and annexing more countryside, local officials decided it was time to give up their independent status and become a single municipality under one government control. With this in mind, they re-named Los Alamitos as an artificial town on top of a hill overlooking downtown LA. On October 14th 1945 during World War II military operations over Japan's home islands pursuant to General Order No 1/1945 (" Commander in Chief's Order No 1"), all Japanese Americans within 500 miles of the Coast Guard Base at Pearl Harbor were ordered into internment without trial or process other than removal pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which gave authority for such action pending determination by Defense Department authorities as to whether there were grounds for continuing detention beyond that specific period...Los Alamitos...was one of several communities located within 100 miles [of Pearl Harbor] placed under curfew on Sunday night December 7th 1945 due primarily to population growth associated with war production efforts..." The first internees arrived at our base on January 17th 1946...Los Alamitos...acted as an intake center for Japanese aliensagersthis included people who had recently been released from incarceration at various naval vessels anchored off shore.... nearly 400 people initially lived here including many women who became known as "the cinder girls."
