In this paper, we will focus on rounds that have been used most often in warfare: artillery shells. In antiquity, artillery was one of the few weapons that could be used offensively as well as defensively. It was primarily used by armies for bombardments – launching large stones or other projectiles at targets from a great distance using canonike type guns (shotguns). These cannons were usually made out of wood or metal and had a range of up to several hundred yards. The use of artillery also allowed for more efficient battle formations because it could be fired over wide areas at fixed points instead of spread out among troops like hand-to-hand combat required. Additionally, it caused more casualties than melee weapons because cannonballs travel much farther than human bullets and can cause serious injuries if they hit an artery or vital organ. The first successful cannonwas built by Assyria in 722 BC; this weapon known as the Akkadian Murali (“Bull Head Cannon”) was able to shoot stone shot that traveled up to 100 meters before exploding (Kirkpatrick 1982). However, the development of firearms did not stop with this early weapon; subsequent developments led to even greater success with cannons such as the British Royal Navy’s HMS Victory which sank Japanese battleship Yamato after hitting her amidships with a single shot in 1904 (Fenton 2003). The advent of firearms changed Warfare forever; now commanders could place greater emphasis on destroying enemy warships rather then merely repelling them (Werth 2005). While artillery is still responsible for causing significant destruction during wartime, its destructive power has come under criticism over recent years due to concerns about its potential collateral damage when firing into populated areas. This is particularly true when using low-yield munitions such as mortar rounds whose impact is less harmful but still causes extensive damage nonetheless (Goudreau 2008).
