Los Alamitos is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 27,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Tahoe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Los Alamitos was established on July 4, 1879. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of cavalry which fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store opened in Los Alamitos on December 15, 1886 by J.P. Coyne and Fenton Waddell from Reno. A hotel and restaurant were built in 1912; these buildings are now used as apartments or condos. In 1925, Los Alamitos became home to the US Naval Weapons Station (US NAS), precursor to the present Naval Air Warfare Station(NAWS) located adjacent to it across El Toro Road today's Dole Rd.. The property sold for $210,000 to Drury & Stone Corporation who organized what is now known as Southern California Edison Company Limited Partnership with Drury as President and Stone as Secretary/Treasurer/Dealer etcetera with powers over Electric Light Railway (ELR) service within their limits including but not limited to: construction of electric lines directly into town centre; erection of poles and wires; contracting out work where needed by other companies for electrical services including telephone lines; electrification of public waterworks systems... In 1933 ELR electrified all streetcars within its limits providing an efficient system for transportation within town center without relying on horses pulling cars along narrow streets due much traffic congestion then existing roads made impossible by fillers having been put down between homes until 1955 when Interstate 95 entering town eliminated most fillers creating open spaces allowing LTTE rebels movement throughout downtown during 1971-1973 siege of Colombo that ended successfully
