The first Europeans to visit the area now known as Long Beach were Spanish soldiers in 1769. The area was part of Rancho Santa Margarita, and was named for a group of small Monterey Island pines. In 1819, two American warships, USS Constitution and USS Perry, collided off the coast of Mexico while on their way to battle an outbreak of war with Spain. The sailors from Constitution died as a result, and the name "Long Beach" was given to the site in their memory. In 1899, the City of Long Beach was created when it was merged into Los Angeles County. It became an incorporated city in 1907. In 1951, it joined the California State Legislature as a member city within Los Angeles County. On January 1, 1957, Long Beach became one of fifty cities in California that adopted a resolution stating that “the people thereof desire to secede from this state” due to increasing social unrest caused by high taxes and traffic congestion. On November 5th 1959 at 6:00pm local time (7am PST), Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor led to World War II which began with Japan's invasion of Manchuria on September 29th 1940. As a result of the Pearl Harbor attack, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers to fly over Japan searching for any enemy submarines before breaking out his report on what he found denying Japanese claims that they had been attacked by someone else (). After reaching Japan airspace undetected (), Powers dropped his atomic bomb onto Hiroshima killing approximately 70% of all inhabitants within seconds ().
