Gun slings were a type of equipment used in early American warfare. They consisted of a bow and arrow, sometimes with an extra sling to hold ammunition, attached to the back of a horse or other vehicle. The weapon was fired from the vehicle and the sling pulled back to release the projectile. The first gun sling was made in 1795 by Capt. John Smith at Fort Necessity on Long Island, New York. It consisted of an old rifle stock with a crudely fashioned recurve bowstring, mounted on a small pole exported from England by Capt. James Cook in 1792 as part of his explorations along Australia's eastern coast. A more sophisticated design appeared about 1810 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed the "Conte Gun Sling." This involved attaching two parallel lines each about 12 feet long by 8 inches wide to either side of a large post or beam at one end, and then threading them through loops set in the ground near where they crossed; this gave rise to the familiar "gun slings" we know today. Gun slings were also used during World War I and World War II as part of artillery fire control systems for guns and mortars; these systems relied on releasing rounds automatically from artillery tubes rather than having someone use a gun sling to take aim and release rounds manually

Long Beach is a city located in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. The population of Long Beach was 118,801 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and third-largest city in Orange County. The name "Long Beach" is derived from the Tongva word lon (a long) and beach (a place to swim). The first written reference to Long Beach was in 1887 when it was known as Las Pulgas. The area that now makes up Long Beach was first inhabited by Native Americans. They built villages near present-day Anaheim and Seal Beach. In 1842, Captain George Vancouver explored what is now Long Beach and named it after his home town of Kingston, England; however, this first use of the name appears to be without foundation. In 1907, developer Edward Jellinek founded City Hall Park on land he had purchased from Buena Vista Land Co., which then leased land from Mission Bay Naval Shipyard for docking purposes. This site became an important commercial center during World War II because it housed ammunition storage, a aircraft hangar and other naval facilities used by the United States Navy during World War II. After the war ended, City Hall Park reverted back to its original status as a public park until it was annexed by Long Beach in 1951 voters approved a resolution annexing City Hall Park into Long Beach Municipal Airport less than two years later. In 1909, Mayor Averill Harriman opened Harborfront Boulevard which runs along both sides of Harbor Island across from downtown Long Beach; this roadway became one of North America's earliest freeways when it connected Los Angeles with San Francisco via Hearst Rancho Cucamonga east of Downtown LA at Pico Boulevard/Harbor Freeway (I-5 today). A second major development associated with Harborfront Boulevard took place soon afterwards – the construction of State Road 1 which linked downtown Los Angeles with Ventnor Avenue north of Sepulveda Boulevard (today's Ventura Blvd.) In addition to becoming one of North America's first expressways nicknamed "the Golden Mile", SR 1 also served as an early example of arteriality: all routes serving individual neighborhoods were built within 2 miles (3 km) or less of their respective stops – making streets like Sepulveda Blvd., Western Ave., Atlantic Ave.–which are now Santa Monica Blvd.–very easy to find and navigate despite their small size compared to today's freeway system! SR 1 remains an important artery through much of Downtown Los Angeles today while HarborFront Boulevard has been largely replaced by I-5 between Downtown LA and Torrance– resulting in several losses for vibrant Midtown Southside communities that have relied heavily on SR 1 connection for economic development!

In 1821, when Salt Lake City was founded by Brigham Young as a Mormon outpost in Utah Territory possessions east of modern-day Los Angeles County line, John D. Rockefeller Sr., founder and CEO (1911-2006)of Standard Oil Company (NYSE: SPX), began buying land developments called "Rockefeller Park" adjoining what is now downtown Long Beach for potential oil production purposes which never materialized due to lack of infrastructure at that time or competition from well known producers such as Shell (SAP:L). However something did happen during this period that would have significant implications for Long Beach - some members including James Phelan (1824-1900), Mayor from 1872 until his death; banker Augustus Fenton; Commodore George Harkness (1814-1892) who served as captain general commander at Vera Cruz during Mexican War - each purchased between $500K-$1M worth of property surrounding then existing Dogpatch Creek within what we know today as Downtown Long Beach boundaries - making it possible for these men to become involved not only politically but economically with early 21st century development occurring around them in what would later become Downtown LA combined with adjacent neighborhoods like Midtown Southshore Heights/Downtown Eastside/University Park/Westwood Village
