Long Beach, California is a city located on the coast of Southern California. The population was 422,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County and the largest city in Los Angeles County. The first humans to live in what is now Long Beach were Atsutomoans who lived along the coast of present-day Long Beach and then ventured inland as traders and fishermen. In 1823, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered Santa Ana Bay and anchored his ship there to trade goods with local Native Americans. Spanish missionaries soon followed and began translating Indian legends into Spanish so that they could be spread throughout Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (founded 1781 by Father Junipero Serra). In 1834, two American whalers named John Cushing and Nathaniel Parker landed on Isla Vista beach near modern day downtown Long Beach to prospect for oil reserves off Point Loma; however, this venture failed because of heavy seas. In 1847, gold was found at Saldana Gulch on Point Conception Peninsula by Mexican miners underwritten by United States Senator Manuel Micheltorena during a visit to Mexico City; this led to huge investments in mining throughout southern California including Long Beach. By 1850, over 1 million people lived in Southern California coastal areas including Long Beach due to waves of immigration from other parts of North America – primarily from Ireland and Germany – during the Gold Rush era (1849-1855). The city’s importance grew rapidly when ferries came ashore daily from Yacht Club Harbor across LA Harbor for passengers travelling between downtown LASALLE (now Downtown LA) and Pasadenarogue points northward; thus replacing steamboats which had been providing these services for decades prior! A fire destroyed much ofowntownunda[2]in 1895 following a lightning strike that hit one side of Yacht Club Wharf warehouse next door; fortunately no lives were lost but $5 million worth damage was done! By 1898 long BEACH had become know as “The Pearl Of The Coast” due largely to Union Pacific Railroad President George Pullman’s promotion OF LONG BAY TO THE CENTRAL PACIFIC ROW IN honor OF HIS EXPEDITION INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN 1897 THAT FOUND NO GOLD BUT DID BRING BACK LARGE TREES AND OTHER PLANTS TO LONG BEACH! It wasn’t until 1907 when US Railway Company president James Watt opened UPON THE COASTLINE A NEW PORTLAND STATION ON THE WEST COAST OF LONG BEACH CA WHICH PROVIDED SHIPPING DOCKS AND STORAGE FOR HUGE TRUCKS supplying our mines out West!!! This new port allowed more commerce onto our coastlines directly impacting our economy & resulting in jobs for many my friends here today! During World War II Naval Base Camp Anacapa was established adjacent to town limits just south of present day Harbor Drive SW overlooking Seal Rock indicating how important defense activities were conducted here!! After WWII saw continuing growth with contributions from institutions like UCLA & SAP Institute etc., it reached such proportions that it became known as “TheCityOfTomorrow” !! Nowadays there are many popular tourist destinations within walking or driving distance such as Newport News Shipbuilding Museum District immediately adjacent To Town Limits where you can view USS Constitution Museum Ships During Navy Week programs or explore nearby USCIS campus housing units while immersed within world famous beaches which include Jenner/Del Mar Pierwalk Park yards harborfront beautiful views And check out Nasdaq corporate headquarters right next door…..the list goes on……….long beach has continuedto thrive as an extremely active cultural center & wonderful place to call home
Spanish explorers first sighted the California coast in 1769 when Gaspar de Portolà sailed into the area on his mapping expedition. The next year, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed from Mexico and entered San Francisco Bay. In 1821, United States Marines landed at Monterey, California in support of U.S. president James K. Polk's campaign against Mexico. On July 4, 1846, Mexican general Agustín Buenaventura attacked and destroyed Fort Yuma in what is now Arizona; this event marks the beginning of the Mexican-American War. On November 8, 1847, Californians voted to become a state; this event was also known as the Gold Rush. In 1850, after much fighting and negotiation within California between white settlers and Native Americans, Californios became an independent country under Governor Manuel Nieto y Salinas with a capital in Sacramento.
