Lompoc is part of the Santa Barbara–Santa Maria-Anaheim Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lompoc" comes from the Chumash word "lomat", meaning "to trade". The first permanent settler in what is now Lompoc was Manuel Nieto in 1847. A year later, José Garza and his extended family arrived and set up a ranch west of town on land that had been donated by Rancho Atascadero proprietor Manuel Nieto to Garza as part of a bargain for independence from Mexico. From thisBeginning there were numerous contacts between Mexicans and Anglo settlers throughout the county., creating an Anglo-Mexican community which developed into one of Southern California's largest cultural traditions. In 1872, Captain Edward Fenton organized a company to explore new land east of Santa Barbara on behalf of Secretary of War Caleb Cushing in order to open up more territory for homesteading within the US government's Mineral Land Act (). After finding only Joshua Trees and scrub brush, Fenton abandoned his plans for colonization and moved back to Monterey Bay where he began developing what would become Lompoc Peninsula into a sleepy seaside resort community with large deposits of gold nuggets (). In 1886, when developer Hiram Sibley founded Sibley & Son general store on First Street (), Lompoc became its centerpiece with its creamery, bakery, grocery store (later renamed Sibley's), post office (), hotel (), wharf(), theater (opened 1907) and dozens of residences (). In 1916 entrepreneur John Pappas opened Pappas' hardware store on First Street () which became one of Northern California's most successful businesses until it went out OFFSITE during World War II. Lompoc is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Lompoc was first settled by Mexicans in 1847 and is named after a small creek that flows through it. The town became an English-speaking community in the early 1900s as residents migrated from nearby Santa Barbara County. In 1946, Lompoc incorporated as a city under the laws of California; it has since been governed by a City Council form of government. The history of Lompoc began with José María Montero and his family who arrived in San Luis Obispo County on July 4, 1847 from Tejas, Mexico. They erected their hacienda near what is now downtown Lompoc and built a homespun schoolhouse to teach their children English language and morals. In 1853, Don Lorenzo de la Rúa purchased land northeast of present-day Lompoc from José María Montero for $4,000. This land still forms the nucleus around which the city developed—the core today being located on parts of Broadway (northwest corner), Paseo del Norte (southwest corner), Los Olivos Road (southeast corner), andeast side streets between First Street and Third Street.— Existing homes were replaced with new structures over time including one old sea chest converted into a movie theater between 1912-1914 that hosted 15 films per day! Today’s complex contains more than 100 buildings dating back to various eras including two theaters/cinemas., 11 banks/credit unions/, 2 fireplaces/grills/(1 original) post office building/, 3 medical clinics/, 1 high school./Today’s biggest attraction are its many art galleries offering unique perspectives on American art such as pieces by Edward Hopper, Grant Wood or Winslow Homer.–contributed by Julie Halsey

Lompoc was founded in 1879 by Mottie Ladd and named for her husband John J. Ladd, an American cattleman who had come toranch near present-day Lompoc from Stockton, California in 1857. The first post office opened in 1880. The town grew rapidly during the 20th century due to its agricultural production and new housing development; however, it has lost some of its importance since then. There are now several small businesses and churches in the town center as well as a few festivals each year such as the rodeo and fairgrounds events that attract tourists from all over Southern California.
