Lompoc is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,075 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is located on the south coast of San Francisco Bay and is east of Sausalito. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Lompoc were members of the Spanish expedition under Petrus Alvares Cabrillo in 1602-03. A mission called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción was built here in 1795 by Father Junípero Serra and dedicated to Our Lady of Calvary. In 1821 Lompoc became part of Contra Costa County; it still has its own board of supervisors and government within local limits as opposed to being part of any city or county government. Lompoc’s rich agricultural history began with Rancho Rinconada which was established in 1847 by Jose Gomez Moreno and his brother Antonio Moreno. The town’s name came from a Rancho that Juan Bautista Rodriguez sold them in 1849: “Lomposi” means “a place where there are grapes” while “Poclos” means “patchouli woodlands” due to the abundance of these trees near the creek bed where they grew. The post office at Pclos opened on July 20,1870, under license from Santa Clara County (although ZIP code 84546 did not exist until 1959). In 1906 Lompoc hosted both the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) and World's Fair (1905), both promoted by Governor Hiram Johnson Sr.. As one result, many jobs generated during those years helped support Lompoc's economy including metal workers at Kaiser Aluminum Company; printers for Hearst Newspapers; scientists working on various exposition projects such as photoelectric cells used forlighting exhibits; hotel managers who booked rooms for visiting dignitaries like Ulysses S Grant; architects who designed new hotels and other buildings throughout California; truck drivers delivering goods across I-680/I-880 between Oakland and Sacramento through what is now Interstate 580/State Route 101 Truck stop road known as Chavez Ravine Boulevard nicknamed "The Super highway" because it provided easy access for trucks coming into downtown Los Angeles from all directions
